About the event

Launched in May 2012, the Spa Girl Tri is an annual Mother’s Day weekend triathlon set in a serene, resort-style setting. Often described as a “race-cation,” the event was created to celebrate the power, grit, and grace of women—bringing together friends and families for a meaningful, active getaway. Designed exclusively for women, the race includes moms and daughters running alongside each other, best friends cheering each other on while racing each other step for step, and moms waving to supportive family members on the sidelines with dad taking on kid duty, making it a true celebration of balance, strength, and support.

This triathlon offers two race distances: a shorter course designed to welcome newcomers to the sport, and a longer option for those seeking a greater challenge. Unlike traditional triathlons that emphasize competition and age-group rankings, the Spa Girl Tri focuses on personal achievement and community. Instead of awards, participants are treated to upscale swag—like branded wine glasses—as a stylish nod to their hard work and dedication. It’s less about placing and more about celebrating the journey.

Part of what makes this event so special is the course itself, set against the scenic backdrop of a luxury resort. Athletes begin with a swim in the resort’s pool—often a lazy river—before transitioning to a bike ride through the quiet streets surrounding the property. The race finishes with a run along the resort’s picturesque golf course. Along the way, participants cheer each other on, exchange high fives, and even chat as they make their way to the finish line. This spirit of camaraderie—rarely found in competitive races—is a defining hallmark of the Spa Girl Tri and one of the reasons it remains such a rewarding and memorable experience.

While the Spa Girl Tri was born at the J.W. Marriott Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, Texas, it has also found a long-standing home at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa since 2012. Over the years, the event has expanded its reach, bringing its unique blend of fitness and fun to other cities including Galveston and Dallas, Texas, as well as Phoenix, Arizona, and Marco Island, Florida.
